According to Bitcoin.com, on May 13, the New Hampshire Department of Finance issued a notice to alert residents to bitcoin scam calls posing as government officials. Scammers use fake official phone numbers to falsely claim that the victim's identity has been stolen, inducing them to "protect funds" through bitcoin transfers. The state Department of Finance stressed that government entities will never ask for payments or transfers in bitcoin, and advised the public to hang up immediately and report such calls to the FBI Cybercrime Complaint Center. The warning comes a week after New Hampshire passed the nation's first "strategic bitcoin reserve" bill, allowing the state treasury to allocate up to 5% of public funds to bitcoin and other cryptoassets with a market value of over $500 billion.
