However, European Union Trade Commissioner Sefcovic said the European Union would not accept continued US tariffs of 10% on its goods as a fair solution to trade negotiations. Sefcovic said the US and the European Union had made progress through multiple rounds of face-to-face and telephone talks since the Trump administration imposed the tariffs. He added that "his goal" remains to reach a "balanced and fair" deal with the White House. He said the issue could be resolved quickly as the two sides reached an agreement to buy more US gas and agricultural products, but warned that it would be "very difficult" to reach a deal that was "clearly good and acceptable for our member states and the European parliament".
